Toftanes
A large archaeological excavation at Toftanes in Leirvík in 1982–1987 revealed an ancient Nordic settlement. Several houses were excavated, as well as a number of archaeological items, providing significant insight into the oldest part of Faroese history.
The excavation proved that the village was inhabited in the Viking age and indicated that Leirvík may be one of the oldest villages in the Faroes.
