Tróndargrund
Tróndargrund (literal translation: Tróndur’s cellar)
The name of the ancient Viking chief Tróndur is all over the villages of Gøta, not least in Norðragøta. A part of the basement of Jákupstova in Norðragøta is called Tróndargrund, in keeping with the legend of Tróndur. When the owners began work on increasing the height of the basement in the early 1980s they came upon bones and other settlement remains, which were confirmed to be from around 630 AD.
The striking statue of Tróndur í Gøtu, created by Hans Pauli Olsen and unveiled in 2008, stands on a site nearby, just a hundred metres or so from Tróndur’s cellar.
